Letters with Love’s Fourth Mission: Cards for Community Heroes
Following the success of our springtime missions, Letters with Love launched its fourth heartfelt initiative: Cards for Community Heroes. This mission focused on recognizing the everyday individuals who make our communities safer, stronger, and more connected—postal workers, bus drivers, librarians, first responders, hospital staff, and more. Our goal was simple: to thank those who rarely get thanked, and to remind them that their work is seen, valued, and deeply appreciated.
A Community Effort to Uplift Those Who Serve
For this mission, we invited participants to write handwritten cards honoring local heroes. Each message was crafted with care—offering gratitude, encouragement, and recognition to the people who show up for us every day, often without applause. Thanks to the compassion and creativity of 54 participants, we collected 168 heartfelt cards—each one unique, colorful, and deeply meaningful. Whether written by a student, a volunteer, or a community member, every card carried the same message: we see you, and we appreciate you.
Delivering Gratitude Across the County
The cards were delivered to a variety of organizations across Rockland County and beyond, including: New City Library, Suffern Library, Albertus Magnus Bus Drivers, New City Fire Department, New City USPS, Suffern USPS, New City Police Department, Suffern Police Department, Clarkstown Parks and Recreation, Transport of Rockland (TOR), Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department, Good Samaritan EMS / First Responders
Each delivery was met with surprise, gratitude, and even emotion. One emergency room nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital shared, “In 8 years, this is the first card I’ve ever gotten.” A Parks and Recreation worker smiled and said, “I’m going to laminate this.” These simple moments reminded us that the cards we create are so much more than paper—they’re powerful reminders that kindness still exists, and that people care.
Why This Mission Matters
The work of community heroes is often invisible—done quietly, behind the scenes, and with unwavering commitment. This mission was about bringing their efforts into the light and giving thanks for all they do to support our schools, towns, and neighborhoods. At Letters with Love, we believe that recognition matters. A handwritten card may seem small, but for many of the recipients this month, it was a first. And for all of them, it was meaningful.
Looking Ahead
As we close our May Mission, we are once again reminded of the power of connection. Thank you to every volunteer who took time to write, decorate, and deliver these messages of love and gratitude. You’ve helped remind our community heroes that their hard work does not go unnoticed.
